  Class Location: French Regional Park. From Interstate 494 take Rockford Road East (Rockford Rd is also named Hwy 9 or 42nd Street) to French Regional Park. Enter the park and follow the road down to Medicine Lake.

Basic Keelboat - ASA Course 101

Basic Keelboat is taught by ASA-certified instructors at French Regional Park on Medicine Lake. Qualified graduates will become charter certified for day sailing on 22-25' keelboats.

This is a four-session, 12-hour course taught by Northern Breezes Sailing School instructors certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). Classes meet evenings or weekends for three-hour sessions. Classes are limited to three students with each student getting a minimum of 45 minutes controlling the boat each session.  The remainder is crew training and seminar. Each session starts with a briefing on the day’s lesson and getting underway and ends with docking and securing the boat.
Each student will receive the book and videotape, Sailing Fundamentals, prior to the start of class, upon registration.


Course Outline

Day 1: Outboard Engine, Getting Underway, Tacking, Points of Sail, Boat Balance,           Sail Trim, Docking, Securing the Boat

Day 2: Review, Tacking & Jibing, Sail Trim, Helming, Points of Sail, Helm Time

Day 3: Review, Controlling Angle of Heel, Heaving to, Reefing, Helm Time

Day 4: Review, Crew Overboard Drill, Solo Checkout, Written Exam

Classes are cancelled and rescheduled during storm advisory or rain days. A Certificate of Completion, Wallet Card, and ASA logbook with Basic Keelboat seal will be issued upon completion. Graduates will also receive National Safe Boating certification approved by NASBLA and the U.S. Coast Guard.

2008 Class Schedule: 12 hour course. 3-hr. weeknight sessions 5:30-8:30 PM or 3-hr. Sat/Sun morning sessions 8:00 - 11:00 AM.
