Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) - Lake Calhoun

Basic Keelboat

Northern Breezes Sailing School  offers you a terrific learn-to-sail program located on Lake Calhoun in the heart of Minneapolis. This is a restricted motor lake on which only electric motors are allowed.

This is a four session, 12-hour course taught by Northern Breezes Sailing School instructors certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). Classes meet weekday evenings, for three-hours. Classes are limited to two students. This creates a small seminar environment which provides for great skipper and crew training. Each session starts with a briefing on the day’s lesson, getting underway, sailing exercises and ends with docking and securing the boat.

Each student will receive a Sailing Fundamentals textbook and DVD, Federal Regulations booklet, ASA Log Book and Pre-Test. Mandatory for certification, membership in ASA is also included in the cost of the course.

Course Outline

Session 1: Outboard Engine, Getting Underway, Tacking, Points of Sail, Boat Balance, Trim, Docking, Securing the Boat

Session 2: Review, Tacking & Jibing, Sail Trim, Helming

Session 3: Review, Controlling Angle of Heel, Heaving to, Reefing

Session 4: Review, Crew Overboard Drill, Solo Checkout, Written Exam

Classes are cancelled and rescheduled during storm advisory or rain days. A Certificate of Completion and ASA logbook with Basic Keelboat seal will be issued upon completion. Graduates qualify for a Northern Breezes Awards Package. This certification or its equivalent are prerequisites for the Northern Breezes Boat Club and more advanced courses.

Course fee: $395. $39 discount for couples (any two people signing up together) who wish to get two sets of materials or $79 discount for couples who wish to share materials off total course fee.

Instructor to Student Ratio is One to Two Maximum!
