Five Day Flotilla Vacations for the Family, Group,
Friends and Individuals
Northern Breezes and
Superior Charters are pleased to offer a new way to share the fun
of cruising with fellow sailors on Lake Superior, the Cruising
Flotilla. Are you an experienced bareboat skipper? Then set sail
on a custom yacht of your choosing from Superior Charters. You
will be accompanied by a lead boat with a professional captain,
technician and host from Northern Breezes. The lead boat will act
as your event organizer, guide and support team.
Are you new to sailing or lacking a full crew? Join the crew of
the lead boat or another boat captained by a U.S. Coast Guard
Captain. This five day adventure will include a fun mix of
organized and informal activities including skipper briefings
each morning, dining aboard and dining onshore. Explore the
wilderness beauty of Lake Superior’s pristine beaches, unique
communities and remote harbors. Enjoy a night sail!
NORTH SHORE FLOTILLAS
Join a flotilla of sailboats that will explore the shoreline and
quaint towns of the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Lake Superior is known as the Caribbean of the North. An “inland
sea” it possesses the pristine Apostle Islands, carved boulder
shorelines, rugged high cliffs, forest lands indigenous to Native
Americans, expansive sand beaches, shipwrecks, sea caves and
quaint historic towns. Sailing aboard 35 to 40 foot sailboats,
you will depart from Pikes Bay, Bayfield, Wisconsin and pass
through the western edge of the Apostle Islands. Your voyage will
follow the southern shoreline to Cornucopia, Wisconsin and
Duluth, Minnesota. You’ll then follow the north shore to Two
Harbors, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais, Minnesota before returning
to Bayfield across the lake.
Itinerary (Somewhat Weather Dependent):
Depart Bayfield, Wisconsin and sail through the western edge of
the Apostle Islands. Beautiful uninhabited islands with sea caves
and pure sand beaches, it is part of the Apostle Islands National
Lakeshore.
Cornucopia
The first night will be spent in Cornucopia on Siskiwit Bay. A
quaint
village considered the western Gateway to the Apostle Islands it
has pure sand beaches, a small marina, historical fishing boats
marooned on shore, quaint shops and a fine restaurant to visit.
Duluth
Following the shoreline we will arrive in Duluth. A major
international
shipping port, we will see barges and sea cargo vessels arriving
and departing from the harbor. We will overnight and explore most
of the harbor as we proceed west to the western end of Lake
Superior.
Two Harbors
Lake Superior possesses more lighthouses than any other coastline
in the United States. A small fishing village, Two Harbors is
known for the Split Rock Lighthouse, which is on the registry of
historical landmarks. We will overnight in Two Harbors’ marina.
Silver Bay
Silver Bay was explored for its mineral wealth and land was
purchased to begin mining copper and iron ore. A small town was
established which eventually grew into the Reserve Mining Company
or 3M. A new marina has been opened within the last two years
where we will dock for the night.
Grand Marais
The northernmost village we will visit south of the Canadian
Border, Grand Marais is the gateway to the Gun Flint Trail. An
artist community lives here. The downtown features a Ben Franklin
Dime Store (well worth exploring), an historical hotel
overlooking the lake, many small shops and excellent restaurants
including “The Angry Trout”. Downtown is within walking distance
of the marina.
Our last day will have us crossing Lake Superior to return to the
Apostle Islands and our homeport of Bayfield at night.
