Melges 20 teams take to Newport waters for an awesome weekend of training and coaching, the perfect set-up for the NYYC Resolute Cup

Newport, RI - The first ever Melges 20 Training Regatta is set to take place in Newport, Rhode Island this coming weekend and will feature a solid mix of veteran and brand new teams looking to sharpen their Melges 20 racing skills.

"The goal of the Training Regatta is to allow new and veteran teams to improve through sharing of information, real time feedback from coaches on the water and a more relaxed, collaborative environment," commented North American fleet manager - Sam Rogers. "We are expecting eleven boats and a solid mix of brand new teams prepping for the Resolute Cup later this summer as well as some successful veteran teams. With each team focusing on a different set of goals, there should be something for everyone and we are really looking forward to kicking off the weekend."

The Training Regatta is unsanctioned which allows for open coaching between races enabling a greater ability to improve. Fleet coach/PRO Nick Ewenson will be busy working with all eleven teams and while helping to push through a jam packed racing schedule.

Based out of Sail Newport, the Melges 20 fleet has an aggressive schedule of fifteen races for the weekend. Assuming the late spring conditions cooperate, the racing will allow for plenty of material at the daily debriefs, along with some tuckered out sailors.

Racing kicks off North of the Newport Bridge on Saturday morning and will conclude on Sunday with racing off of Ft. Adams. After racing on Saturday, the Yo Momma team led by Devin McGranahan will host a bountiful dock party that will serve as the perfect setting for the debrief; cold beverages and thirsty sailors eager to improve, it doesn't get much better.

A NEW RESOLUTION This weekend's event is one of many Newport-based opportunities for Melges 20 Corinthian teams to brush up on their skills in anticipation of the NYYC Resolute Cup, hosted by the New York Yacht Club taking place on September 12-18.

Earlier in 2016, The Melges 20 Was Named Sportboat of Choice for the Event, and Melges Performance Sailboats has pulled out all the stops by building a minimum of six brand new boats! Read The Full Story.
