Newport Shipyard Expands Yard Capabilities with Custom 200CII Capacity Mobile Boat Hoist

Marine Travelift recently announced the delivery of a customized 200CII to Newport Shipyard in Newport, Rhode Island. The delivery of the boat hoist makes it the fourth Marine Travelift unit to currently call the Newport location home. The 200CII joins their existing 500C (1,100,000 lbs. capacity), 100 BFMII (220,000 lbs. capacity), and 70 BFM (140,000 lbs. capacity) Marine Travelift mobile boat hoists.

The new 200CII boat hoist is equipped with some unique features including electronic all-wheel steering, in-line eight wheel configuration, top beam extension, and a raised engine compartment just to mention a few.

The addition of the custom designed 200CII will provide expanded capabilities for the shipyard, allowing for the maneuvering of larger vessels in and out of their indoor service facility. This new capability has not only expanded general operations during the boating season, but has also provided the ability to take on larger projects during the winter months within a heated facility.

In order to maneuver in and out of the existing indoor facility the overall height of the boat hoist had to be lowered, while keeping the hoisting capacity intact. Lower blocks also needed to be provided with provisions for direct sling connections to maximize the lifting height capability of the boat hoist. The Marine Travelift in house engineering team accepted the challenge without hesitation, taking the custom project head on.

Along with the challenge of providing a unit with reduced overall height, the Marine Travelift engineering team had to provide a longer than standard wheel equalizer frame to space the tires and wheels at a greater distance. This was needed to accommodate loading requirements for existing launching piers at the Newport site.

With such a customized machine, the arrival of the new 200CII inline to Newport Shipyard was only accomplished with a close partnership between the Marine Travelift engineering and sales teams and Newport Shipyard management.
