Iowa State Sailors Win JFJUS National Championship

John Snyder of Iowa State Sailing Club and crew Ryan Richardson, an ISSC Alumnus of Storm Lake, Iowa won the 2003 edition of the FJUS National Championships, held June 20-22 at Edgewater YC, Cleveland, Ohio. They beat multi-year multi-class National Champion and Doyle sailmaker Greg Koski by 2 points and last year's FJUS Champions Tom and Becki Wyatt by 3 points, in a 5-race series. Races were held on Lake Erie, as part of Cleveland Race Week, a big multi-class event, with separate starts for each class.

Saturday had winds of 5-12 mph, starting stronger, and dying back through the afternoon. Waves averaged about 2 feet, with some as high as 4 feet, which made driving the boat a challenge (and some crews seasick). Sunday, the water was flat, and there was very little wind for the first race, with breeze picking up for the second race. Courses were windward-leeward twice-arounds with a downwind finish. The first course on each day was shortened: first race on Saturday became a once-around; first race on Sunday became a single upwind leg. On Saturday, there was some controversy since the race committee shortened the course as the leaders were nearing the leeward mark. Snyder/Richardson were awarded first place on redress (they had had a big lead, but were off to the side of the new finish line, and the 2nd-place boat was in a better position to finish). In the end, this point was unnecessary to the final standings.

Snyder and Richardson were racing a rare wooden FJ that John bought last year (it and a sister ship were built in Detroit in 1981 by 2 auto industry engineers). It is a very light, stiff hull, and drove well through the waves on Saturday. Also, 2 out of 3 of our sails were brand-new, and the third had only been used for one Regatta previously. And they were an experienced team, having finished 2nd and winning the Masters trophy in the last two FJUS Nationals. John is Faculty Advisor of Iowa State Sailing Club and member of University of Iowa Sailing Club, winning their Club FJ Regatta series last year. Ryan is a certified Sailing Instructor, regional A Fleet Hobie racer, and past President of Iowa State Sailing Club. In the difficult conditions on Saturday, John concentrated on driving the boat, and keeping good sail shape and boat tuning, and Ryan called most of the tactics (upwind in particular).

FJUS Championships are raced in International FJs, which in addition to the standard mainsail and jib, have a spinnaker, a trapeeze for the crew, and are generally about 40 lb.s lighter than the Club-FJ commonly used by college teams and sailing clubs.

The Champion skipper's traveling trophy is a big silver punch bowl, and Champion crew's traveling trophy is a big silver ladle. After the awards, according to tradition, the winners poured a bottle of champagne into the bowl, and ladled out into little glasses for each person (of legal age) who sailed. Then they drank a toast. Someone said, "To the winners." And the winners said, "And to all who sailed!" (The rest of the tradition is to throw the winners in the lake, but they went without that this year, due to 5 foot high docks, unclear water, and Lake Erie flotsam and jetsam around.)

You can see pictures and read more about it on the FJUS website (www.ussailing.net/fjus).

John will be organizing FJUS Eastern Regionals at the Iowa Interlakes Regatta, September 6 and 7 at Lake Red Rock, near Des Moines, IA.
