10th Annual MC Masters Regatta
Fifty-two sailors in three categories raced for honors in this Tenth Anniversary of the MC Class Scow Masters Regatta. This year’s event was hosted by the Missouri Yacht Club on Lake Lotawana, Missouri.

Lonar Cup

| Dan Hollinger, “Encore”, flying his chute in the Lonar Cup around Big Island on Lake Minnetonka. |
Four brave souls sailed in the “Lonar Cup” on Saturday, June 15 out on the big lake in 10 knot winds around the Big Island on Lake Minnetonka, MN. The Lonars were John Rainaldi on Amity, David Olson on Azor, Dan Hollinger on Encore and John Sligh on Gusto. After the race on Thursday night it looked like we might have 6 boats turn out for the Lonar but as it turns out two skippers were merely engaged in “beer talk” and were no shows for the prestigous annual yachting event. Gusto and Amity started toward the bouy end of the line while Azor and Encore were closer to the committee boat at the start (actually Encore was above the committee boat but that’s another story). The first leg found Amity stuck behind a tuna boat which gave Gusto clear air toward the channel. Azor was initially ahead of Encore on the first leg. The wind was fluky going through the narrows and the Lonars questioned the wisdom of flying a spinnaker. The spinnakers were all set-up for a starboard reach and therefore a decision needed to be made prior to turning the corner and gybing onto port. Sligh put up the chute first closely followed by Rainaldi who hugged the island while Gusto worked the middle of the lake. Rainaldi had good wind velocity and kept above the big boats while Sligh was buried in “Tunaville”. Amity drove over Gusto and showed no mercy as they approached the final turn. Azor and Encore were trailing but not by much. They went to school on the lead boats and saw what to do to increase boat speed. You could almost hear their bow waves lapping up against their sides. J.R. was leading into the final turn until he had a little spinnaker halyard issue which necessitated a self-imposed 360 to try and free his line. Sligh saw an opportunity to close the gap and headed straight for the shallow bouy marker to cut off J.R. J.R. was slightly ahead and to Sligh’s leward when all of a sudden a personal puff came out of nowhere and landed on Gusto’s sails. J.R. said “Golly gee John where is that wind coming from?” or words to that effect. Meanwhile Encore and Azor were closing the gap. Gusto finally had Amity in a half nelson which he couldn’t shake. Gusto took the gun, Amity was second, Encore third and Azor fourth (this was Dave’t first Lonar Cup - way to go!). After a couple lies and beers at the club the winner bought everyone the first round at Sunsets as agreed prior to the race. Fun was had by all.
Nation’s Top Amateur Sailors Advance to UBS Challenge U.S. Championship in Newport, Rhode Island
The winning amateur sailors from the six UBS Challenge regional qualifying regattas were named today: Lars Hansen of Chicago; Nathan Hollerbach of Detroit; Brad Rodi of LA; Ben Cesare of Connecticut; Yandell Rogers of Houston; and Anthony Kotoun of Boston, will race against top ranked U.S. sailors in the UBS Challenge U.S. Championship held in Newport, Rhode Island, July 27-29. The top three sailors from that event will advance to the UBS Challenge Finals one week later to compete against America’s Cup contenders and the chance to share the $100,000 purse, one of the biggest in sailing.
The UBS Challenge is the first and only sailing championship to pit the United States’ best amateur sailors against America’s Cup teams. The tournament began in May with a series of regional qualifying races in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Houston, New York and Boston. The UBS Challenge Finals mark the historic return of America’s Cup contenders to Newport for the first time since 1983 and is one of the last major opportunities these crews will hav eto race against each other before the America’s Cup trials. Currently, nine America’s Cup crews and four top-ranked professional sailors are confirmed to race. In the UBS Challenge U.S. Championship, the regional winners will compete against last year’s top finishers from the U.S. Match Racing Championship: Mason Woodworth; Andy Lovell; Scott Dickson. Also racing will be Brad Funk, a leading college sailor from Old Dominion University; John R. Gochberg from the New York Yacht Club; and one of the top ranked U.S. Women’s match racing teams. The top three finishers of the UBS Challenge U.S. Championship will advance to the UBS Challenge Finals. The UBS Challenge is sanctioned by U.S. Sailing.
